Why You Can't Trust the Medical Industry

Why You Can't Trust the Medical Industry

The medical/pharmaceutical industry is no longer an entity to be trusted.  The medical profession has been taken over by greed, leaving the patients twisting in the wind, at the mercy of the insatiable desire for money that runs the industry.  Many people still put all their trust in their doctor, and in spite of their good intentions, their methods are compromised by pharmaceutical reps and simply by the way the system works.  Many have presented the facts on the subject in various books; here I want to present a little of what I’ve found to encourage you step out and question what your doctor says, be skeptical and begin to put the control of your health back into your own hands.

The Mindset

The older generation has traditionally put all their trust in their doctor, and most wouldn’t dream of going through life without regular visits. After all, they are the ones with the lengthy education, the degrees and the experience. This generation in particular is the group that will have rows of prescription bottles to deal with every day, and the group that suffers the consequences of all those chemicals.

I am wondering if a lot of this mindset might have been encouraged back in the '50's when industrialized countries literally got launched into the space age with a huge emphasis on science.  I remember how we were encouraged in grade school to participate in the annual science fairs, and the popular saying "better living through chemistry" was based on a chemical company slogan of the time.  We all began to believe that answers could be found in the chemistry lab for about anything.  Over the years, science and chemistry began to be seen as legitimate while natural approaches were ignored and eventually denigrated.

Drug companies may have begun with noble goals, but over the decades, they have lost sight of their mission to bring healing and help to those in need in favor of selling more and more drugs to an otherwise healthy public at any cost.  But the public often has no clue that they have left the path of integrity, still believing that first, drugs are necessary for heath, and second, that the drug companies have their best interests at heart.

It has become the norm to expect to be on medication after medication because people have put their complete trust in the medical community to manage their health.  And breaking that mindset is difficult at best, partly because it takes a great deal of effort to find out the facts for yourself.  There is an enormous amount of information available online now that provides help of all kinds, help that will allow anyone willing to take the time to take control of their health.

The FDA and Medical Research
The original intent of the FDA was to protect consumers from dangerous products, but the agency appears to have lost its way and to be heavily influenced in its decisions by the drug industry. . . 54 percent of the time, experts hired to advise the FDA on which medicines should be approved for sale have a direct financial interest in the drug or topic they're asked to evaluate.  In turn, it's very common for FDA employees to retire to well-paid positions on the advisory boards of large drug companies.
(Lee, John R. MD, Zava, David, PhD; Hopkins, Virginia. What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer.  New York, NY: Warner Books, 2002, p. 23)
The FDA controls what is available for sale and is supposed to be protecting consumers from dangerous substances.  But it no longer does what they were created to do, allowing an enormous number of dangerous drugs and other substances to stay on the market.

Complaints are filed every day about various medications and their serious side effects, but often the only action taken is to revise the literature insert.  Drugs such as statins and hormone replacement therapy have been demonstrated to be extremely dangerous, yet they are still widely prescribed, with an amended list of side effects.
. . . the side effects of properly prescribed prescription drugs are the fourth- or fifth-leading cause of death in the United States.  This doesn't even include deaths from improperly prescribed drugs, deaths from in-hospital errors, and unreported drug deaths. . . All the drugs that are killing so many people are approved by the FDA and considered part of the standard of medical care (Lee, p. 22).
Aspartame isn’t a drug, but it is a chemical substance widely used in diet products.  There have been thousands of complaints registered with the FDA concerning the neurological side effects of the sweetener, yet it is still flooding our store shelves in a host of different products.

The FDA has associations with the pharmaceutical industry that are more than inappropriate; they are downright corrupt.  Grants from the drug industry influence study results, and they also exert a great deal of influence over the education and research processes as well.  Money talks, and money rules.  Coming up against the establishment is dangerous for doctors who could be fined or even lose their licenses if they stray from the standard of treatment.

According to Uffe Ravnskov, getting articles into medical journals is impossible if they contradict prevailing thought.  He has challenged the accuracy of articles, as well as tried to get his own published, but has been met with nothing but brick walls.  Letters he has written objecting to the conclusions drawn in articles are ignored.  He quotes a former editor of The British Medical Journal, Richard Smith, who concluded that the whole peer review system is “slow, expensive, ineffective, something of a lottery, prone to bias and abuse and hopeless at spotting errors and fraud.” [1]  Ravnskov does a detailed expose of the entire medical/pharmaceutical/governmental corruption involved in gaining approval for drugs.  And it is apparently truly corruption; that’s not overstating the situation.

How Statin Drugs Really Lower Cholesterol: And Kill You One Cell at a Time by James B. and Hannah Yoseph, MD

This book recounts the Yoseph's path looking into how statins came to market in the first place, and in the process they expose the corruption in the FDA as well as in the drug companies that push these pills. The book is thoroughly documented with images of original paperwork that prove what they found. Their conclusion is that the FDA is no longer there to protect the public.

Currently, the situation is one of extreme moral hazard. A pharmaceutical company makes far more money acting illegally, than acting legally. If the activity is exposed, no-one goes to prison and no-one is personally bankrupted. All that is required is  to set aside enough money to pay the fine, if it ever arrives. ‘Don’t worry, dear shareholders, it’s only $9Bn.’ Phew, and I thought profits would be damaged.’  (Dr. Malcolm Kendrick)

Cholesterol, Statins and the Low-Fat Diet

There are three health issues in particular that truly upset me where the standard of treatment is concerned, the first being the whole cholesterol/statin issue and the highly-touted low-fat diet.  Statins have been proven to be dangerous over and over again, yet people pop them like candy every day.  The medical community scares patients, telling them that they will die of heart disease if they don’t stay on these medications, and nothing could be further from the truth.  The whole cholesterol issue has been twisted to benefit the drug companies to the point that some even consider putting the stuff in our drinking water!

Cholesterol is not the bad guy, but the drug companies are raking in obscene profits having convinced the population that it is.  For more on this issue, see Alzheimer's, Dementia and Statins.  There you will find links to lots of online articles and books at that debunk the whole cholesterol myth.  For more on this and the dangers of the highly-promoted low-fat diet, see my blog post here, Cholesterol, Mother of All Scams.

In Ravnskov's book,  Ignore the Awkward!, he has systematically gone through study after study that contradict the basic assumption that cholesterol causes heart disease, and statins help prevent it.  He explains how difficult it is to go against public opinion that has been ingrained for decades, an opinion based on faulty research:
What do you think will happen if one of the scientists who participate in a drug trial openly questions the methods used or the way the results are presented?  Do you think that he will be invited as a well paid speaker to the next congress, or that his research will be paid for by the drug company in the future?  Even independent researchers may find it difficult to challenge an idea that is accepted by everyone.  Colleagues may question their intellect as may those who allocate research funds.  Very few will dare to rock the boat (p. 75).
Concerning the skewed interpretation of research results in the name of covering up side effects, Ravnskov says this:
. . . drug companies and their paid research staff are clever enough to cover up any adversity associated with cholesterol reduction, whether by dietary means or by drugs, and to exaggerate the trivial benefit. . . questionable trial results are presented in the best possible manner, meaning the most profitable way, profitable for the doctor and the drug industry, but certainly not for the patients (p. 76-77).
More and more people are taking themselves off statins, realizing the severity of the side effects involved. When going against the tide of public opinion and the mandates for lower cholesterol from the medical/pharmaceutical industry, it takes a great deal of conviction and backbone.  But as people realize the damage these drugs do, public opinion will begin to change.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and Estrogen Dominance

Hormone Replacement Therapy is another area of concern to me.  Menopause has been portrayed as a “disease” caused by a deficiency of estrogen.  Again, nothing could be further from the truth. Estrogen is routinely prescribed to women with symptoms of menopause and PMS, actually aggravating the situation.  For example, if a woman comes into her doctor’s office with menopause symptoms, she will automatically be put on HRT.  Later, when she finds out she has endometriosis, the doctor will often recommend a hysterectomy.  It was the estrogen in the HRT that caused the endometriosis, but convincing a doctor of that is nearly impossible.

There are huge profits involved in the medical treatment of women, including HRT, mammography, hysterectomy, reproductive cancers and osteoporosis. With all this money on the line (and we’re talking an enormous amount of money), doctors are not apt to break ranks anytime soon.  This leaves women left dealing with the fear they instill, and the ensuing side effects of their treatments.

The truth about hormone balance is found many places online, but Dr. John R. Lee's website in particular.  Here you will find out about how most women have too much estrogen to start with.  Dr. Lee treated women with natural progesterone cream successfully for years before he passed away, and many continue to enjoy the benefits of the supplement.  I encourage you to check out my post Hormone Balance and Estrogen Dominance where you will find other links to all the help you need to break free from the standard of treatment and regain control of your health.

Many doctors have no respect for  Dr. Lee and his research, so brace yourself if you choose to discuss this with your doctor.  My doctor just snickered when I mentioned his name, and a friend’s doctor openly called him a quack.  And one word of warning- hormones are very potent substances, so you need to educate yourself first before trying natural progesterone. Better yet, find someone who will write a prescription for an apothecary that will custom mix natural estrogen and natural progesterone for you. My doctor defers to the pharmacist at the apothecary because she knows he is more up to speed on this than she is.

. . . the traditional treatments are in my opinion, a violation of the physician’s Hippocratic oath to “do no harm”.
Theodosakis, Jason.  The Arthritis Cure.  New York, NY: St. Martin’s Press, 2004, p. xvi.
The way the medical community treats osteoarthritis is a crime. Osteoarthritis involves the degeneration of the cartilage between bones that normally allows them to slip easily against each other.  As the disease progresses, bones will eventually end up rubbing against each other precipitating the symptoms of arthritis- pain and inflammation.  The medical community has traditionally considered osteoarthritis to be incurable, which is why treatment involves pain killers- acetominophen (Tylenol), NSAID’s (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) in the form of ibuprophen (Motrin, Advil), and sometimes steroid injections (cortisone).

The obvious drawback to this approach is that pain killers only cover up the symptoms while the disease continues unchecked.  That leaves the surgeons waiting in the wings to replace your joints when they are finally destroyed.
. . . over one hundred thousand Americans a year are hospitalized from the complications of these drugs (p. 57).
The side effects of these pain killers is absolutely deadly.  All these drugs cause serious damage to the digestive tract with long-term use and result in ulcers and internal bleeding.  Kidney failure, liver failure and deaths from the overdose of acetominophen are the predominant problems with this kind of treatment.  And to add insult to injury, NSAID’s may actually hasten the progress of the disease (p. 131).

These warnings also apply to a newer class of drugs called COX-2 inhibitors.  All the major studies of these drugs were funded by the drug companies promoting them, data reported to the FDA contradicted what was published, and employees of the drug companies were actively involved in the testing.  Fishy?  These drugs increase the chances of a heart attack, and they too will hasten the progress of osteoarthritis.

The proven alternative is outlined in The Arthritis Cure by Jason Theodosakis, MD.  In this book he outlines a program that includes the use of three specific supplements- glucosamine, chondroitin and a newer supplement called ASU.  Glucosamine and chondroitin have both been thoroughly tested and proven out over and over again with osteoarthritis reversed in patient after patient.  These supplements are used as part of a comprehensive program to overcome arthritis.  This program includes diet changes, exercise and supplements to fight depression if necessary.  He goes into great depth explaining the action of the supplements and he makes all kinds of diet and exercise recommendations.

After extensive testing of hundreds of glucosamine products available, he only recommends two that actually have the full amount of the active ingredients as labeled.  They are Osteo Bi-flex and Nature Made Triple Strength Tripleflex.  After spending years testing products and finding most of them to be substandard with nowhere near the strength as labeled, he has made available his own line of supplements with sufficient active ingredients to actually work.  These products are available at his website.

When it comes to osetoarthritis, it makes much more sense to get Dr. Theo’s book and follow his recommendations.  His success rate is huge, and it will save you a great deal of money and pain.
In head-to-head comparisions, not only are glucosamine/chondroitin and ASU more effective than NSAID’s for long-term use, they’re far safer.  As shown by dozens of carefully controlled clinical sutdies, not a single death worldwide has been attributed to these supplements after hundreds of millions of doses over many years.  By comparison, at any given time, more than 13 million Americans are taking an anti-inflammatory drug- and these drugs lead to some 16,500 deaths and 103,000 hospitalizations every year (p. 120).

Health the Natural Way

Many people just don’t need the medications they have been prescribed. There are plenty of websites that tell you how to change your lifestyle to regain control.  Nothing will replace a healthy diet (with the right kinds of fat!), and nothing will replace the need for exercise.  Most people in the industrialized world create their own health problems by not watching what goes into their mouths. Health is a lifestyle issue that covers everything- what you eat and drink, how much exercise you get, and stress control.  Staying free from the biased influence of the medical community can be done, but it takes effort and education.
In its zeal to find a magic drug to stop breast cancer, the industry has forgotten about healing.  It doesn’t have time.  It has to run the patients through the HMO mill, get them out of the hospital faster, cut costs, avoid lawsuits, keep positions and funding, and make the drug companies happy by promoting and prescribing their products so that they’ll keep funding the universities and hospitals.  (Lee, p. 19)
The medical/pharmaceutical industry does NOT have your best interests at heart; they very simply want your money.  Here I will insert a disclaimer where individual doctors are concerned, understanding that they generally do their best for you.  The problem is that they are not trained in nutrition and prevention, and a large part of what they know comes straight from the pharmaceutical reps that circulate around doctors’ offices and run the "continuing education" that doctors all attend. Generally, they are overworked and just simply don’t have time to find out any different.

This is where you and I have to pick up the ball and run with it.  Education is the first step in managing your own health.  Links to books and websites are below.  Second, if you need to change how you eat, do it.  This isn’t rocket science, merely a decision that will take a great deal of commitment.  You can’t be healthy if you don’t give your body what it needs to repair itself.   Third, increase your physical activity, assuming you need to.  Walk if nothing else.  And last, stress management is vital.  Stress wreaks havoc with your health.

We can have control of our health if we choose to take the time.  There are plenty of success stories out there; you could become one of them.  There are conditions that require monitoring by a physician, diabetes in particular, so just use your common sense.  However, I would wager that there aren’t that many conditions that can’t at least be helped by a lifestyle change.  But brace yourself for resistance if you choose to go the nutrition/prevention route.

Statin Drug Side Effects by Duane Graveline, MD

If you are on a statin drug or are thinking of going on a statin, this fully referenced book, Statin Drug Side Effects, is a "must read" for you. The unacceptable legacy of statin drug use at today's high doses is a trail of chronic aches and pains, numbness, weakness, confusion, fatigue, shortness of breath and even heart failure in hordes of unsuspecting victims. Only by knowing this information, and in consultation with your healthcare professional, can you make an informed decision about your health care. If you are a user of Vytorin, Lipitor, Zocor, Crestor, Mevacor, Pravachol or Lescol you must read this book. Most of the statin side effects I discuss are unknown to your busy doctor. Although knowledgeable about muscle and liver problems, few have heard of statin amnesia and other forms of memory dysfunction and fewer still associate hostility, aggression and profound depression as statin related. As a former astronaut, aerospace medical research scientist, flight surgeon and family doctor, I was appalled by the lack of information in the medical community on the full range of side effects of the statin drugs. This book is a comprehensive reference source and summary of side effects of statin drugs.

The cholesterol campaign is the greatest medical scandal in modern time. If you have read the author's previous books ´The Cholesteol Myths´ (out of print) or 'Fat and Cholesterol are GOOD for You', you should know that for certain. For instance, according to more than 25 scientific studies old people with high cholesterol live the longest. Another shocking fact is that the authors of a recent American study of more than 130,000 patients with acute myocardial infarction found that on average, their cholesterol was lower than normally. Their finding has already been confirmed by others. What they also found was that three years later, mortality was twice as high among those whose cholesterol was the lowest. Their conclusion? We must lower cholesterol even more! But there is much, much more. The author's aim with this book is to show how prominent scientists have turned white into black by ignoring all conflicting observations; by twisting and exaggerating trivial findings; by citing studies with opposing results in a way to make them look supportive; and by ignoring or scorning the work of critical scientists. Those who have not read his previous books may not quite understand the width of these misleading processes. He has therefore included a short and simplified review of the most obvious contradictions to the cholesterol hypothesis. At the end he presents what he and his colleague Kilmer McCully think is the real cause, here told in a more simple way than in his previous book.

Sugar- the Real Villain

Sugar Is Costing Us Our Health

We’ve been trained for decades by the medical/pharmaceutical industry as well as the government to believe that fat is the evil lurking in food that will bring on chronic disease.  Only recently is information coming out that indicates that fat is not the evil we’ve been led to believe.  [For more information about the fat/cholesterol issue, see Cholesterol- Mother of All Scams.]

The real danger is now believed to be sugar in the form of refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup that is in almost all processed foods, as well as carbs in general.  More and more information is coming out about the role sugar consumption plays in heart disease, diabetes and cancer.  Refined flour is also a huge part of the problem in that it is converted almost immediately to glucose in your body.

According to the USDA:
In 2000, each American consumed an average 152 pounds of caloric sweeteners, 3 pounds below 1999’s record average 155 pounds. That amounted to more than 2/5ths  of a pound—or 52 teaspoonfuls—of added sugars per person per day in 2000.  USDA Factbook
There are the obvious sources of sugar- soft drinks, cookies, cakes, candy.  But sugar is hidden in just about every kind of processed food- salad dressings, barbeque sauce, ketchup, breakfast cereals, spaghetti sauce, even peanut butter.  I looked at the label of one major brand's "natural" peanut butter and found they'd added sugar.  Not exactly natural.  Real the labels and you will see how much we rely on sugars to flavor what we eat.  Honestly, it’s not that teaspoon of sugar you put in your coffee that is the danger; it’s the soft drinks and the sugar hidden in everything else.

What is the impact on our health?  It is huge.  What follows is a summary of what I’ve found about the role sugar plays in chronic disease.

According to a Reuters article posted April 30, 2012, the medical costs of obesity in this country annually are $190 billion; an overweight person will pay $1850 more per year in medical expenses than someone who is not overweight.  And if you add in the costs of heart disease, diabetes and cancer that can all be triggered by sugar consumption and resulting obesity, the figure would be astronomical. Our addiction to sugar is draining us financially as well as physically.
Sugar triggers insulin, and insulin is what moves fat into fat cells.  Jorge Cruise has turned this whole concept into a weight loss industry, and I have proven it out. Limit sugar in all its forms, and weight WILL come off.  It’s not rocket science- consume too much sugar, and you will gain weight.  And the ironic part is that so-called “health” foods that line grocery store shelves are anything but healthy- they limit fat, but add sweetener (generally high fructose corn syrup) to add flavor. So you go to the cookie aisle and find the packages that have the green packaging labeled “fat-free” and you think you’re getting something that won’t kill you.  Think again.

To lose weight, you have to limit carbohydrate intake, and that covers sugars as well as starches.  Jorge Cruise has a program that makes it easy to watch what you are consuming.  I highly recommend his book The Belly Fat Cure in which he explains how the diet works, and includes lots of recipes and menus.  A couple tips- you have to limit fruit as long as you are trying to lose weight because of its fructose content, and carbohydrates also need to be limited and switched from refined flour to whole grain products.  Whole grains take longer to be processed, and will not cause the spike in blood sugar levels that refined flour products cause. But beware that whole grain products are still carbs and will still convert to glucose that will be moved to fat cells if too much is consumed. There are many that are now advocating limiting grain products altogether.

I always thought that the diabetes link was pretty obvious- sugar puts on weight, and overweight people are at risk to develop diabetes.  [Here I’m referring to adult-onset type II.] Not wanting to get into technical medical explanations, I’ll point you to a great site I just discovered-  Here you will find lots of great articles covering a wide range of subjects.  This one explains the whole glucose/insulin concept.  Basically, too many carbohydrates, sugar in particular, leads to insulin resistance.  They cause blood sugar spikes that will eventually overload the pancreas- it will not be able to keep up with the demand for insulin.  Diabetes is a direct result of a diet overloaded with simple carbohydrates- sugar, high fructose corn syrup and refined flour products. And don't think that if you're not overweight you are immune- you aren't. The guy that wrote Sugar Nation (link below) will attest to that.

Years ago while researching nutrition and prevention, I had found another factor that comes into play. Chromium is a mineral that is necessary for sugar metabolism:
. . . adequate chromium is necessary in the diet for normal carbohydrate metabolism.  Animal studies have confirmed that a deficiency of this mineral results in glucose intolerance. . . chromium supplementation improves glucose tolerance, increases cell sensitivity to insulin, and reduces circulating insulin levels, while reducing the amount of insulin required to maintain optimal blood glucose levels.  Nutrition Desk Reference. Robert Garrison, Jr., M.A., R.Ph., and Elizabeth Somer, M.A., R.D.  New Caanan, CT: Keats Publishing, 1995, pp. 183-185.
Then I found that sugar actually depletes chromium from your body.  Sugar contains none of the nutrients necessary for its digestion so sugar actually depletes your body of a whole list of nutrients, including chromium in particular.  Chromium as well as vanadium supplements are used to treat glucose intolerance, though this must be done under a doctor’s care and blood sugar levels must be monitored carefully.

Heart Disease and Gout

Sugar in the form of fructose as found in high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has been the sweetener of choice since the '70's.  HFCS, in many of the processed foods on the grocery shelves, is used by manufacturers because it is sweeter than sugar so less is required, and it is cheap.  Soft drinks account for the lion's share of HFCS consumed.

According to, consumption of HFCS increases uric acid levels in the bloodstream, and uric acid results in low-level inflammation of blood vessels.  It is this inflammation that damages arteries and triggers the accumulation of cholesterol to repair that damage.  Gout is another result of high uric acid levels.  Studies are proving a connection between fructose consumption and uric acid levels. (See Sugar Can Also Increase Uric Acid.)

Connections are being made that show how uric acid may be responsible not only for heart disease but also for high blood pressure, stroke, kidney disease and other conditions.  Dr. Mercola has a wealth of information and links at his site.

A new article, Sugar Hurts Heart Health More Than Salt, in Medical Daily summarizes a report published in the British Medical Journal that targets sugar, specifically fructose, as the primary dietary issue in high blood pressure and heart disease in general.

Sugar Feeds Cancer
When patients were put on low-carb diets in 2007, their cancers reversed spontaneously. In W├╝rzburg, Germany, researchers concluded that cancer cells have a different metabolism, the so-called Warburg hypothesis, or Warburg Effect, first described in 1924 by Otto Warburg. He concluded that "the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar."  The Warburg Effect
Cancer cells feed on sugar.  Eat sugar, feed cancer.  This discovery has given rise to cancer diets that limit or eliminate carbohydrates. (Just do an internet search for "cancer diet" and you will find quite a few.)  And connections are being made that show sugar as a cause of some kinds of cancer.  The connection appears to be with insulin.  As insulin levels increase with increased sugar consumption, that insulin promotes tumor growth.  Of course, the process is quite complicated, but that seems to be the bottom line.  I found this in a New York Times article printed in April of 2011 called Is Sugar Toxic?

Update: 5 Reasons Cancer and Sugar Are Best Friends-  recent post at that explains the relationship between sugar and cancer.

Sugar- Addictive and Toxic as Well as Deadly

Sugar binges, sugar cravings, sugar highs- all are part of the picture of our dependence on the stuff. 60 Minutes ran a piece awhile back on the toxicity of sugar, raising the awareness of the problem. Here is the clip "Is Sugar Toxic?" as found on

The Alternatives
Beware of the Sugar Substitutes

Sugar substitutes abound; aspartame is widely used in diet products but has received an enormous number of complaints filed with the FDA and is believed to cause headaches and even seizures. Aspartame turns to phenylalanine and either methanol or formaldehyde, depending on which article you read. Phenylalanine in particular seems to be the problem, resulting in seizures in some people. And I recall reading several years ago that aspartame will actually stimulate your appetite. For more information, see Scientific Abuse in Seizure Research Related to Aspartame and Aspartame Promotes Grand Mal Seizures.  It should be rather revealing that it is Monsanto, a chemical company, that makes the stuff.

Sucralose, aka Splenda

As for sucralose, or Splenda, this stuff is also produced in a laboratory, not in nature, and it turns to chlorine when ingested.  Chlorine will clean out your gut, allowing yeast to run unchecked, not a good thing.  Do you really want to be ingesting chlorine?

It took months for me to make the connection between my symptoms and Splenda.  I was experiencing all kinds of digestive tract issues including gas and diarrhea, not full-blown runny, but loose enough. And when I found out that Splenda will make your stool acid, I am assuming that is why I was so irritated in the nether regions to the point of bleeding. This may also be why I have had several bladder infections during this time, but I'm not sure on that point.

Another aspect that is apparently connected includes feelings of anxiety and depression. It seemed like my circumstances were absolutely going to overwhelm me for several months. I fought feelings of fear and upset, and I was unable to sleep well.  All of this can be attributed to Splenda use, and honestly, who would make a connection there?  This is why it is imperative that you check into this for yourself if you are a Splenda user, look at the links I have here and see the ridiculously long list of side effects that people have experienced.

Try Splenda SicknessStop Using Splenda or any of innumerable websites I found when searching for Splenda side effects. That first one in particular is packed with reported issues from people who have experienced the nasty backlash from using Splenda. And what is absolutely appalling is that the FDA has approved both of these chemical sugar substitutes to infect our food supply, and is to date pretty much ignoring reports of side effects. Money talks.

Our sweet tooth is a problem. We have become so accustomed to having our food sweetened that we expect it and won't eat it if it's not. The best course of action is to un-accustom ourselves to sweet altogether.

I had started using stevia, thinking it was the safest way to get the sweetness I wanted. But I have since found out that it is suspected of being a hormone disruptor since its molecules have a hormone structure, and have shown contraceptive effects in rats. I found this at Why I Quit Stevia. With hormone balance an issue anyway, I have decided to stop using the sweetener altogether.

In looking for information about xylitol, I found, a site that answers questions about the product.  Health food stores carry the sweetener. I am not aware of any side effects of xylitol, but will continue to check into it.

Ultimately, it looks like it would be wise to just get used to less sweetness altogether.

The Real Cost of Sugar

The effects of sugar on our system is profound.  If you want to take charge of your health, limiting sugar is an absolute must.  More and more evidence is coming to light that makes a clear connection between sugar and chronic disease.  Just looking around at the general public makes the point; the majority of people I see are at least some overweight, and an alarmingly large percentage are obese.  The fountain soda machines are always busy, cranking out HFCS's by the truckload, and America's health is paying the price.

If you consider the rising costs of healthcare, the obscene profits pulled in by drug companies, and the high cost of health insurance (for those of us that have to pay for our own), it seems obvious that sugar is feeding the medical/pharmaceutical industry and not your body. Eliminating sugar is an absolutely vital part of changing your lifestyle to take charge of your health.

More and more books are coming out all the time on the dangers of sugar. All summaries have been lifted from Amazon.

The Case Against Sugar by Gary Taubes

Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever; obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup. He explains what research has shown about our addiction to sweets. He clarifies the arguments against sugar, corrects misconceptions about the relationship between sugar and weight loss; and provides the perspective necessary to make informed decisions about sugar as individuals and as a society.

Sugar Blues- It's a prime ingredient in countless substances from cereal to soup, from cola to coffee. Consumed at the rate of one hundred pounds for every American every year, it's as addictive as nicotine -- and as poisonous. It's sugar. And "Sugar Blues", inspired by the crusade of Hollywood legend Gloria Swanson, is the classic, bestselling expose that unmasks our generation's greatest medical killer and shows how a revitalizing, sugar-free diet can not only change lives, but quite possibly save them.

Suicide by Sugar-  It is a dangerous, addictive white powder that can be found in abundance throughout this country. It is not illegal. In fact, it is available near playgrounds, schools, and workplaces. It is in practically everything we eat and drink, and once we are hooked on it, the cravings can be overwhelming. This white substance of abuse is sugar.  Over two decades ago, Nancy Appleton’s Lick the Sugar Habit exposed the health dangers of America’s high-sugar diet. Now, in Suicide by Sugar, Appleton, along with journalist G.N. Jacobs, presents a broader view of the problems caused by our favorite ingredient. The authors offer startling facts that link a range of disorders—from dementia and hypoglycemia to obesity and cancer—to our growing sugar addiction. Rounding out the book is a sound diet plan along with a number of recipes for sweet, easy-to prepare dishes—all made without sugar or fruit.  Suicide by Sugar shines a bright light on our nation’s addiction and helps us begin the journey toward health.

Sugar Shock- A provocative expose of the negative effects of sugars and simple carbs-and how to break the addiction. Most readers already know that succumbing to sweets too often can lead to obesity and diabetes. What many don't know, however, is that too many "quickie carbs" can bring on a host of other maladies-such as "brain fog," fatigue, mood swings, heart disease, and even cancer-from which millions may be suffering because of their sugar or carbohydrate habits. Once besieged by 44 seemingly unconnected symptoms, former "sugar addict" Connie Bennett, an experienced journalist, managed to kick sweets and simple carbs in 1998. She improved her health-and uncovered extensive medical research that substantiated her theory: people who eat too many low-caliber culprit carbs could be in sugar shock. Based on the insights of thousands of physicians, nutritionists, researchers, and "sugar sufferers" worldwide, SUGAR SHOCK!(tm) not only addresses how badly sugar affects the body, it demonstrates how everyone can kick the sugar habit.

Sugar Nation: The Hidden Truth Behind America's Deadliest Habit- Amazon does not have a synopsis of this book, so I found one written by Johnny Bowden:  In the course of this story- which is as compelling as a beach read and just as impossible to put down- you learn facts about the food industry, the idiotic and nonsensical advice of the American Diabetes Association, the politics of sugar, and the connection of diabetes to heart disease, cancer and Alzheimers. You actually follow Jeff on his journey to understand what went wrong and in the course of understanding what happened to him, you learn how diabetes really develops– and what happens to the body under the toxic burden of the Standard American Diet.  But this is not a book about facts, figures and statistics. It’s a deeply personal story that is all the more engaging because you actually come to care about the characters.  O’Connell had access to some of the best researchers in the country; their ideas and quotes are woven into the fabric of the story seamlessly, and contrasted with the advice routinely given by the dozens of doctors he visited around the country who are treating diabetic patients in a way that’s so boneheadedly wrong it borders on medical malpractice. His sources read like a “who’s who” of low-carb researchers as well as plenty of “establishment” sources like the American Diabetes Association and the aforementioned doctors. The contrast is telling- and O’Connell lets you make up your own mind about who’s right.  Written in a friendly, breezy style- O’Connell’s best writing ever, by the way—the book is just plain impossible to put down. In a weird way, the book reminds me of Sesame Street in that it makes learning fun. You’re so entertained and engaged, you barely notice that you’re being educated.  Put Sugar Nation on your must-read list. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Cholesterol- Mother of All Scams

Cholesterol- Good Guy or Bad Guy?

We have all been thoroughly trained to believe that a high blood cholesterol level puts you at risk for heart disease. Recently, I started looking into the side effects of statins (cholesterol-reducing medications) because of the state my mother was in at the time. And the more deeply I dig, the more I find out about the whole cholesterol theory.

I have put together some of my findings about the side effects of statins in my post Alzheimer's, Dementia and Statins.  But in the process of uncovering all this, I have also found out about how cholesterol is not the bad guy. The entire war on cholesterol is misguided because it is based on faulty research.  In this post I want to give an overview of what I’m finding as well as links to more information if you are interested.

If you are taking cholesterol medications, you owe it to yourself and your family to find out more. It is an absolute necessity these days to educate yourself about health and not just swallow what the doctor gives you in the way of information as well as drugs. Most doctors are overworked and simply don’t have time to look into this kind of thing. They do as they were trained to do, and that is to dispense medications to control symptoms. And the drug companies certainly don’t have your good health as their motivation; they just want your money.

The Theory
Part One

We all know this one; high cholesterol is dangerous because it gets deposited in your arteries, clogging them and putting you at risk for heart disease.  This has been the mantra we have learned from our doctors and from the media. No one would dream to question any of this because it’s all fact that’s based on years of research, right? And because this is so pervasive in our society, some companies apparently require cholesterol tests and medication to lower levels, and some people have even considered putting statins (cholesterol-lowering medications) in our drinking water. Can you imagine?

This is just how ingrained this thinking is now. And anyone that tries to come against this doctrine is met with serious resistance. There is now a wealth of information available in books and online that contradict this and expose the faulty research that has been used to keep statins as the most prescribed drugs today. The following is an excerpt from a New York Times article printed Nov. 1, 2011 entitled Pfizer Reports Higher Profits and Share Buyback Plan :
Pfizer, the world’s largest drug company, surprised Wall Street in a good way Tuesday with higher-than-expected quarterly sales and an aggressive plan to respond to looming generic competition to Lipitor, the top-selling drug in the world.
At the same time, Pfizer executives said they were negotiating with payers and pharmacy benefit managers to preserve branded Lipitor sales against generic competition. Lipitor loses United States patent protection on Nov. 30. The cholesterol drug had $10.7 billion in sales last year, more than 15 percent of Pfizer’s total of $67.8 billion sales.
A letter from one benefit manager, Catalyst Rx, to pharmacies said they would receive a large point-of-sale discount on brand-name Lipitor to beat the price of generic competitors. The flier, an unusually aggressive posture toward new generic drugs, said pharmacies would be asked to block any sales of generic Lipitor and substitute the Pfizer version, with presumably a lower price, from December through May.
Let there be no doubt as to why this cholesterol doctrine has taken over.

The Theory
Part Two

Enter the idea that fat is bad. This whole concept which has been promoted by the US Government for decades is another reason the population has been taken over with chronic disease. The "fat is bad" theory has run amok, wreaking untold damage on the health of nations around the world.

The problem with this is that fat plays a crucial role in the body. Not only is cholesterol an absolutely essential substance for a myriad of functions, there are several fat-soluble vitamins that will not be absorbed if no fat is being consumed. Vitamins A, D, E and K are all fat-soluble, and deficiencies of these will cause a world of hurt. For a list of those symptoms, check out

The food industry has cashed in on this trend quite handsomely. They have reaped millions in foods with little or no fat but lots of sugar or sweetener, highly processed stuff that will do nothing but deprive your body of nutrients while packing on extra pounds. It is seriously unwise to eat foods with little or no fat, but this is precisely what we have been told to do, and most of us have believed this for decades. I used to avoid butter like the plague, but now I use it regularly.

Contrary to popular belief, it isn't fat that puts on pounds, it is sugar, high-fructose corn syrup (hidden in a world of things) and flour products (refined or not) that cause the trouble.  (See The Science of Weight Loss for more on this.)  And it is these products that abound in so many of the so-called "healthy" products on grocery shelves today. Is it any wonder that obesity is running rampant in this country?

Of course there are good fats, and there are bad fats, a subject for another post.  I am still researching this one in light of this whole cholesterol scam thing.  Here, I am simply stating that your body needs fats to survive, so I think it's safe to eat those eggs.

What Is Cholesterol?

So just what is cholesterol? It is a white, waxy substance that is created in your liver and in specialized cells in the brain that is an absolute necessity for life. It is found in every cell in your body, being a constituent of cell walls and nerve fibers, and is used in tissue repair. Cholesterol is also a precursor to steroid hormones and bile acids, and used in the formation of Vitamin D. Large concentrations of cholesterol are found in the brain and spinal cord, vital for nerve signal transmission.  If you don't consume enough cholesterol, your liver will produce it to bring levels back up to optimum.

Because cholesterol is an absolute necessity for life, long-term statin use WILL have repercussions. It was my mother's memory loss that first brought all this to my attention, already having an understanding that a large percentage of the human brain is cholesterol. Consensus seems to be that it is 60 percent fat, but I haven't found out how much of that is specifically cholesterol. This is a significant amount. Deprive your body and thus your brain of cholesterol, and brain function will be impaired. Simple logic. On looking into this, I found that it is specifically the myelin sheath around nerves that is composed of cholesterol, and it is the myelin sheath that actually transports nerve impulses. It would seem logical that most if not all of that fat in the brain would be cholesterol. A cholesterol deficiency will damage the myelin sheath and impair nerve signal transmission.

Cholesterol's function in tissue repair is where the heart disease issue comes into play. Cholesterol does indeed collect in arteries; understanding why brings understanding as to why cholesterol isn't the problem. Damage to arteries is what triggers the body to send cholesterol in to repair them; finding out the cause of the damage will fix the problem. Eliminating the cholesterol only treats symptoms. The actual cause of artery damage will be covered directly.

Statin Fallout

Because of the vast number of functions cholesterol performs, depriving your body of this substance will result in some extremely serious side-effects, generally over a period of time, though some people experience side effects right away. At the top of my list is brain function. As stated above, memory loss is one of the primary side effects, and it doesn't necessarily have to be long-term use to experience this one. Dementia, Alzheimer's and amnesia can all be the result of statin use.

Another major problem is muscle deterioration. Statins deprive your body of CoQ10, a necessary nutrient for energy production and is also an antioxidant, protecting cells from free radical damage. Without CoQ10, there is no energy produced, and that is most readily observed in muscle tissue where energy needs are high. Muscle aches and weakness are the number one side effect, indicating that muscle damage is already occurring. Can you see how this could lead to a much greater risk of heart attacks, the one thing statins are supposed to prevent?  Initial muscle weakness is referred to as myopathy; when the muscle tissue actually starts to break down, it is called rhabdomyolysis, a condition that can lead to kidney failure. Both of these conditions can be the result of statin use.  For more information about these two side effects, see Alzheimer's, Dementia and Statins.

Another problem is the fact that statins will deprive your body of organic compounds called dolichols, substances that are used in the formation of neuropeptides that control emotions. When these chemical processes are disturbed by statins, the result seems to be behaviors such as depression, irritability, aggression, violence and even suicide.

Another lesser-known side effect is hair loss. Hair has a high cholesterol content, so as cholesterol levels go down with statin use, available cholesterol for hair growth and maintenance drops. Another possibility is that because cholesterol is a precursor to steroid hormones, hair loss could result from the lack or imbalance of those hormones.

Because cholesterol has such wide-ranging functions in the body, the side effects could be much greater than we suspect. Deprive your body of cholesterol, especially over years, and the fallout is bound to be severe.

What Actually Causes Heart Disease?

Artery damage is the problem in heart disease. If the arteries weren't damaged, the cholesterol wouldn't collect there in the first place. So finding out what causes the damage will get to the cause of the problem. According to Chris Kresser among many others, it is inflammation that causes heart disease, not the cholesterol that collects there to repair it.

In Uffe Ravnskov's book, Ignore the Awkward, it is proposed that infections cause arterial damage and trigger heart attacks. Others are looking at the damage done by uric acid in the blood, a dangerous substance that increases with sugar consumption.  Dr. Joseph Mercola explains how fructose specifically (high fructose corn syrup) will elevate uric acid levels in the bloodstream leading to chronic low-level inflammation among a whole host of other health-robbing actions. He specifically mentions heart disease as a result of elevated uric acid levels.

Another factor is homocysteine, an amino acid that oxidizes and releases free radicals that damage arteries. According to Jean Carper in Stop Aging Now!:
High blood levels of homocysteine triple your chances of heart attack and double your risk of blockage of the carotid arteries. p. 269.
Homocysteine will attack blood vessel walls, trigger clotting mechanisms and will stimulate the growth of smooth muscle cells in artery wall linings that promote the formation of plaque. A certain amount of homocysteine is normal, but elevated levels are dangerous, and those elevated levels occur simply because there is a deficiency of B vitamin supplements, specifically B6, B12 and folic acid. Heart disease, at least for some people, could be considered a deficiency disease. See an interview with Kilmer McCully, M.D.  for more information. It is his research that brought this whole concept to light many years ago. The resistance he met in the medical community cost him his research funding and his job, but has since been vindicated. The real cause of heart disease is finally being recognized.

Bottom line- it is pretty well accepted (at least outside the medical community) that it is NOT cholesterol that causes heart disease. The cholesterol is the good guy, there to help repair the damage already caused by inflammation brought on by infections and/or elevated levels of homocysteine and uric acid. These are the causes I have found so far. Common sense would then dictate that you quit consuming high fructose corn syrup (carbonated beverages, primarily), and take some vitamins!

For a great overview of the actual relationship between heart disease and cholesterol, see Zoe Harcombe's article Cholesterol and Heart Disease: there is a relationship but it's not what you think.

Statins- 21st Century Snake Oil?

Many authors have done their work researching all this. Much has been written to expose the fraud that has been perpetuated on the public all in the name of profits, so here I will simply point you to their books so you can find out for yourself, and I sincerely hope many of you will do so. A great deal of evidence is presented to show the faulty research upon which all this cholesterol hype has been based. Statins have been marketed as almost a miracle drug while there is little evidence to support claims that they save lives. According to Duane Graveline in his book Statin Drug Side Effects, (p. 109), statins do have an anti-inflammatory effect that may actually prove helpful to some, but with the obvious side effects, there are other options that are much safer. To put it bluntly, we have been lied to.

The damage these drugs have caused and will cause leaves me completely appalled. I am fairly certain that my mother would not have ended up in a nursing home if she had not been given statins for years. She passed away with severe memory loss and was wheelchair bound with major muscle damage that apparently was not reversible.

Generally speaking, doctors have the best of intentions, but are overworked and are not taught much if anything about nutrition and prevention; they are trained to diagnose symptoms and treat them with drugs and/or surgery. And they of course are completely indoctrinated into the theology of cholesterol and heart disease. I encourage you to check out 6 Ways to Take Charge of Your Health.  Placing blind trust in the medical profession is just plain dangerous- the entire system has become too corrupt. I have listed resources below so you can educate yourself.  It is high time we all learn how to take care of ourselves and take charge of our health.
